Sharing a link is often the first impression your site makes, and without Open Graph tags that impression is a bare URL with no image, no title and no reason to click. Adding them takes five minutes per page and measurably changes how often shared links get opened.
This produces the full set: title, description and canonical for search engines; Open Graph for Facebook, LinkedIn and WhatsApp; Twitter card markup for X. Values are HTML-escaped as you type, so a quotation mark in your description cannot break the attribute it sits in — a small detail that silently breaks a surprising number of hand-written meta tags.
The social image is the field people get wrong. Use 1200×630 pixels. Keep important text away from the edges, because different platforms crop differently, and use an absolute URL starting with https — relative paths are ignored by every scraper.
Worth knowing
- Social image at 1200×630, absolute https URL, under 1 MB. Anything else risks a broken or blank preview.
- The canonical URL should be the exact address you want indexed, including or excluding the trailing slash consistently.
- After publishing, run the page through Facebook's Sharing Debugger to clear their cached version.
Questions
Frequently asked
Do I need both Open Graph and Twitter tags?
X falls back to Open Graph when Twitter tags are missing, so the Twitter block is optional. Including it gives you control over how the preview looks there specifically.
What size should the social image be?
1200×630 pixels. That ratio works across Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp and X without awkward cropping.
Why is my preview not updating after I changed the tags?
Platforms cache previews aggressively. Use Facebook's Sharing Debugger or LinkedIn's Post Inspector to force a refresh.
